WhatsApp has started testing a new feature that allows users to record and send short video messages to others, providing another way to communicate within the app.

The new feature will allow users to record videos of up to 60 seconds and share them with others directly in chat. This works similarly to the voice memo option, which allows users to send audio recordings to other people in the chat. The new feature is available for both Android and iOS users with WhatsApp beta 2.23.13.4 and 23.12.0.71 respectively. Unfortunately, it is currently available to select users and is being rolled out in stages, so you may not see the option available even if you have the aforementioned beta installed on your phone.

If you want to try it, the best way to check if you have this feature is to tap the microphone icon next to the chat bar. If the icon turns into a video, this feature is enabled for you. To use it, simply press and hold the video icon and a three-second timer will start where the app will start recording. As with voice memos, WhatsApp offers a lock option so you don’t have to hold down the video button to record a message.

After you finish recording, you can tap the red button in the bottom center of the screen to stop recording. Then you can play the video before deciding to send it. WhatsApp also has a delete button in the lower left corner so you can delete a video you don’t like and start over. When you are satisfied, you can click Send to share the video with the other person.

As mentioned, this feature is currently available in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android and iOS. There’s no official word on when the company plans to release it to the public. Recently, WhatsApp has been testing a few new features to keep up with competitors like Telegram.

WhatsApp recently introduced Channels, a broadcast-like feature for businesses and executives. The company has also begun testing the ability to edit messages in both the desktop and mobile version of the app, along with the ability to share your screen during a call. Source
