EU wants replaceable batteries in smartphones from 2027

The European Parliament has passed legislation to limit the environmental impact of batteries. As a result, replaceable batteries in smartphones are becoming mandatory.

The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of new rules on the sale and processing of batteries in the EU. For example, in the future, large batteries will have to be provided with a label that indicates how much CO2 was emitted during their manufacture. There will also be minimum recycling targets. For example, fifty percent of the lithium in used batteries must be recycled by 2027.

Replaceable battery

More important is the commitment to make batteries interchangeable. By 2027, the EU also wants consumers to be able to easily replace batteries in portable devices themselves. This means that manufacturers are no longer allowed to stick their smartphone batteries to the devices. It should also be easy to open a device and access the battery.

2027 is not a hard date. Manufacturers can apply for an extension if necessary. In the long term, it should definitely be possible to get a new battery yourself and install it in your smartphone. The proposal is not final yet. Member States still have to approve it.
