Devices from June 15 Western Digital My Cloud series up to firmware version 5.26,202as well as devices My Cloud Home And like SanDisk up to firmware version 9.4.1-101 lost access to the cloud platform. Released on May 15, these firmware updates contained important security-related fixes. Users were informed about these strict security measures through the company’s official website.

Why were legacy systems disconnected from the cloud?

This move by the manufacturer is a direct response to the recent hacking incident targeting its resources. In April, Western Digital was forced to temporarily suspend its cloud service due to a critical vulnerability. A firmware update was not released until May to address this vulnerability, which allowed attackers to remotely execute arbitrary code on affected devices, potentially leading to a ransomware infection.

Although My Cloud devices without cloud access will still work locally, users can restore cloud connectivity by installing a firmware update.

But it seems that for Western Digital, one problem follows another. This week, the company found itself in the middle of a controversy over unfair selling practices. According to PCWorld, owners of Synology NAS devices have received notifications requiring them to replace fully functional hard drives that have been in service for three years.
