Billionaire Elon Musk has confirmed that his brain chip startup Neuralink will begin its first human trials this year. Speaking at the VivaTech event in Paris, Elon Musk said Neuralink plans to implant the chip in the first patient with tetraplegia or lower extremity paralysis.

Last month, Neuralink said it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its first human clinical trial. At the same time, the company is facing investigations by the United States of testing on animals. The FDA confirmed to Reuters that the agency had approved Neuralink’s use of its brain implant and surgical robot for trials, but declined to provide further details.

According to Reuters, quoting experts, if the Neuralink device can prove to be safe for humans, it will take a few more years for the startup to get permission for commercial use. The company also competes with other neurotech companies that have embedded their devices in humans.

Musk has promised at least four times since 2019 that Neuralink will begin human trials soon. Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, has seen a sharp spike in its prices after getting permission to experiment on humans.
