Google remains true to tradition and suddenly stops with a new successful service of its own. This time, Google Domains lands on the scaffolding. Without warning, Google will refuse the service. However, domains do not end up in the garbage: the American hosting giant Squarespace takes over the customers.
Google Domains is a simple service that allows customers to quickly get started with their own web domain. Ten million domains registered through Google Domains now go to Squarespace. This hosting provider keeps the agreed prices for at least twelve months. For existing customers, billing will continue to take place via the usual channels for a while.
Over time, Squarespace will swallow all Domains customers. The billing then takes place via this hosting provider at the Squarespace tariffs.
Google doesn’t shy away from discontinuing services without much warning. In March, the Grashopper app still had to believe in it. Google Glass for business followed later. The end of the professional Google Plus variant Google Currents was announced in April.
