Changes to Grammy Awards rules limit the use of artificial intelligence in music

ABOUT Grammy Awardone of the most prestigious awards in the music industry, is undergoing significant changes in its rules, in order to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in music production. The Recording Academy, which is responsible for organizing the event, recently announced a set of new “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Protocols” that set the rules for the acceptability of musical works with AI elements.

The new rule makes it clear that only “human creators” can win the top Grammy award. According to the rules, a work that is not authored by a person cannot be admitted to any of the categories. However, works that use artificial intelligence components may be considered eligible if the human creator has made a “significant” contribution to the music and/or lyrics. The Recording Academy emphasized that the element of human authorship must be truly relevant to the work in question.

This decision comes at a time when the use of artificial intelligence in music is becoming more common. Last week, Paul McCartney announced that the upcoming “last Beatles record” was being written using artificial intelligence to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo. McCartney called AI “scary but exciting”, emphasizing the need to keep an eye on the development of this technology.

In addition to the AI issue, the Recording Academy has also made changes to other Grammy Awards categories. For example, to be nominated in the Album of the Year category, the music creator must now be responsible for at least 20% of the work. This change reflects the intention to recognize the efforts and active participation of the artists, composers, producers and other professionals involved in the creation of the album.

Other reward changes

Another significant modification is the reduction in the number of nominees in the major Grammy categories. Previously, up to 10 nominees were selected in the categories “Best New Artist”, “Album of the Year”, “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year”. This number has now been reduced to eight to increase competitiveness and highlight the most efficient jobs.

In addition, there have been changes in the rules for the Best Musical Film category. Previously, at least 50% of documentary content was required to be based on musical performances. This requirement was removed, allowing for a greater variety of formats and approaches in making musical films. However, biographies and feature films do not yet fit into this category.

To keep pace with changes in the music business, the Recording Academy has added three new categories to the Grammy Awards. The awards will now be for Best Dance Pop, Best African Musical Performance and Best Alternative Jazz Album. These additions reflect the evolution of musical genres and the importance of recognizing different forms of artistic expression.

In short, the changes to the Grammy Awards are intended to set clear rules for the use of artificial intelligence in music and promote recognition of human creators. By adjusting several categories and adding new awards, the Recording Academy is committed to adapting to changes in the music industry and ensuring that the Grammy Awards are relevant and superior.
