Roman Catholic bishops should discuss how Church better say hello LGBTQ+ people and divorcees, Beyond thinking about how to give women are stronger decision and allow them to be ordained deacons, according to a Vatican document released Tuesday.
The 50-page working paper of the world synod of bishops also proposes to discuss whether bishops can be allowed married men become priests in outlying areas, an opportunity that Pope Francis put off after negotiations at a similar meeting in 2019, and even seems to suggest that the Church should sympathize with those in polygamous relationships.
The synod took two years to prepare, during which time Catholics around the world were asked about their vision of the Church. The first session will take place in October this year, and the second in October 2024.
Document known by its Latin title Instrumentum Laboris, includes suggestions for reflection and discussion for delegates resulting from consultations.
The “Question for Insight” in the document reads: “How can we create a space where those who feel reviled by the Church and unwanted by society feel recognized, welcomed, free to ask questions, and not condemned?
“…what specific measures are needed to accommodate those who feel excluded from the Church because of their position or sexual orientation? (e.g. divorced and remarried people, people in polygamous marriages, LGBTQ+ people, etc.)?”
The Church teaches that same-sex attraction is not a sin, but homosexual relationships are a sin. It forbids polygamy, but practice is well tolerated in parts of Africa for converts who already have more than one wife.
Document Part dedicated to womenan issue that is expected to get a lot of attention at the monthly meeting in October following Francis’ decision in April to allow female delegates to vote at the meeting for the first time.
“What specific steps can the Church take to update and reform its procedures, institutional arrangements and structures to ensure greater recognition and women’s participationeven in government decision-making processes…?” he says.
According to the paper, most local responses call for consideration women became deacons.
Deacons, like priests, are ministers and should be men in church current. They cannot celebrate mass, but they can preach, baptize, celebrate weddings and funerals, and administer the parish with the permission of the bishop.
