The president of the Association of Relatives of Prisoners, Delma Ordóñez, told reporters that the fight and fire in Cefas allegedly occurred after the authorities notified about the new rules inside the prison.

Deputy Security Minister Julissa Villanueva ordered an “immediate intervention” at the prison following the declaration of a state of emergency over the fight and assured the authorities “will not tolerate acts of vandalism or violations.”

There have been about a dozen shootings or clashes in Honduran prisons since April, where overcrowding and overcrowding prevails, there are not enough proper and safe physical quarters to house prisoners, and sanitary and hygienic conditions are deplorable.
