Peruvian police arrest former prime minister Betsy Chávez, who is under investigation for the alleged crime of conspiracy against the state and participation in the coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo.

Police detained Chávez at the home of his relatives in the southern city of Tacna, where several agents had arrived to carry out orders from the judiciary, according to images broadcast by a local TV station.

Shortly before the arrest, the former official held a live broadcast on Tik Tok, in which she said that she was waiting for the police after the promulgation of the court order. According to police, Chávez was transferred to a prison in Tacna, waiting to be transferred to while the investigation was underway.

Chávez is also under investigation, along with other former ministers of the previous government, as alleged co-authors of the crime of revolt in connection with Castillo’s announcement in December that the Congress was dissolved and the decree passed.

After the failed coup d’état, Castillo was deposed by Congress and later captured, sparking protests that left dozens dead in three months in clashes with police and in crashes involving violent roadblocks.

The arrest warrant was issued by the Supreme Court’s Permanent Criminal Division “in response to an 18-month remand request” against Chávez requested by prosecutors, according to a tweet from the judiciary.

Chávez, Castillo’s lawyer and staunch defender, has repeatedly denied involvement in or knowledge of the former president’s coup attempt, as have two other former Castillo ministers who are also under investigation in the case but are at large.

According to the prosecutor’s investigation, images of the Government Palace and witness statements, Chávez was at the Government Palace with Castillo before and during the self-coup speech.
