Broadcom launches three new chips for WiFi 7. This allows network equipment manufacturers to start building routers and access points. There is also a new chip for smartphone specialists.
The BCM6765 is a chip designed specifically for home routers. BCM47722 is a variant for access points. Both chips share many specifications. Both support 320MHz connections and multi-link, for example, as you would expect from a WiFi 7 chip. The latter technology allows devices to communicate over multiple WiFi channels at the same time.
The BCM47722 was specially developed for enterprise access points and includes several additional functions for this. For example, the chip has support for Bluetooth Low Energy on board, just like Thread and Zigbee. Future hardware equipped with the chip will have built-in support for connecting sensors, for example, but also for locating devices in a room.
Finally, there is the BCM4390. This chip brings Wifi 7 connectivity to smartphones and tablets. This chip also supports Bluetooth, Zigbee and Thread.
Wifi 7 is the successor to Wifi 6, which is now ubiquitous in new devices and routers. Wifi 7 supports up to four times faster data transfer: up to 46 Gbps. The standard is based on three frequency bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. These new chips represent an early step in the introduction of the standard. A significant number of devices that effectively support WiFi 7 are not expected until next year.
