I don’t have global data, but based on my personal experience WhatsApp voice calls have become one of the most used features of the service from Meta, only after audio and before text messages, i.e. the function that was the reason for the birth of the service. I know quite a few cases of people who use WhatsApp more often than the call function of the phone itself and its operator to make and receive calls.

This makes sense because WhatsApp voice calls, like other messaging services, are integrated into the complex communication design that these services offer us. Other than that, the only costs they are subject to are the costs of the data we use, regardless of whether the communication connects us with a neighbor of third party B or with a person more than 10,000 kilometers away. And also, the sound quality has improved dramatically in recent years (it was terrible in the early days). The list of benefits is therefore quite extensive.

The problem is that not only users have moved their voice conversations from their phone to WhatsApp, i.eso do spammers. And not only because of the advantages mentioned above, but also because setting up filters and blocking calls received through this type of service is sometimes more complicated than limiting incoming phone calls. To give an example, if you’ve ever been foolish enough to sign up for a service related to trading, cryptocurrencies, certain educational fields, etc., you’ve surely already received the occasional call, generally international, over WhatsApp, in which they tried to sell a motorcycle.

Fortunately, the companies that make these spam calls will have it a little harder from now on. And as we can read on his official blog, WhatsApp has launched a new feature to silence calls from unknown numbers. That way, if you ever receive a voice call from a number that isn’t in your contacts, it will be added to your received calls list but won’t ring on your phone, so you won’t know about it until you check the app’s notifications and call log.

What if, for whatever reason, you don’t want calls from strangers to be muted? No need to worry because this lock is optional and it is disabled by default, so unless you change it, you will listen to all calls received through WhatsApp. And if you want to activate the blocking, just open the application on your smartphone, go to the settings section, select Privacy, then click on Calls and there you will see a control with which you can activate and deactivate this new and very practical function.
