A huge leak resulted in more than 100,000 ChatGPT user credentials ending up on the dark web.. The security vulnerability affects users who logged into the platform from its launch in June 2022 until May of this year. Brazil is among the most affected countries along with the US, France, Morocco, Indonesia and Pakistan.

Records containing compromised accounts peaked at 26,802 in May 2023, with Asia Pacific experiencing the highest concentration of ChatGPT credentials for sale in the last year.. This information is stored and actively traded on darknet marketplaces, including lists of domains found in the log and host IP address information.

Most of the credentials were found in logs associated with several families of information stealing malware. Raccoon, a popular malware “distributor”, was used to hack exactly 78,348 accounts. Raccoon has been compared to the world’s AAA equivalent of information stealing malware and is purchased by attackers through a subscription model.

Other malware was also responsible for the leaks

Other malware has also been used to steal user credentials. Second place, far behind Raccoon, went to Vidar, which gained access to 12,984 accounts, and third place went to 6,773 credentials captured by the RedLine malware.

“Employees enter secret mail or use a bot to optimize proprietary code. Given that ChatGPT’s default settings save all conversations, this could inadvertently provide attackers with valuable information if they get the credentials,” he notes. IB

These compromised accounts don’t just provide access to users’ personal information. Since most users store their conversations in the OpenAI application, attackers gain access to those conversations as well. This includes anything from company trade secrets to personal diaries.

It is for this reason that it is important that ChatGPT users take important precautions when using the tool, even if it does not handle sensitive information. These include the need to use stronger passwords and enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
