A cypress in China became the tallest tree found in Asia. Experts believe it is the second tallest tree in the world at a staggering 335 feet (102 meters). It is interesting that the total height of the pedestal “Homeland-Homeland” monument is 102 meters.

The giant cypress was discovered in May by the Peking University research team at the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon Nature Reserve in Bome County, Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, according to a statement by the university.

It is not known which species the cypress belongs to, but it is suggested to be a Himalayan cypress (Cupressus torulosa) or a Tibetan cypress (Cupressus gigantea), according to Chinese state media reports. The tree is 2.9 m (9.6 feet) in diameter, according to China’s state-owned People’s Daily Online.

Prior to this discovery, the tallest tree in Asia was the 331 feet (101 m) Yellow Meranti (Shorea faguetiana) located in the Danum Valley Reserve in Sabah, Malaysia.

Tibet Autonomous Region has a unique ecosystem that is increasingly affected by development and global climate change. However, the area – and especially the town of Nyinchi – has recently been the focus of efforts to preserve flora and fauna. Peking University researchers have documented tall trees in the area to better understand environmental diversity and aid environmental conservation efforts.

Last May, the team found a 272-foot-tall (83 m) spruce in southwest China, which they originally believed was the largest tree in China. The team also discovered a 252-foot (77 m) tree in Madog County a month ago.

Continuing their research this year, the researchers mapped the trees in the region and determined their height from the ground, using drone, laser and radar equipment.

After several days of field research, a cypress was found and confirmed to be the tallest tree in Asia. Using drones, a 3D laser scanner, and lidar technology that uses light beams to measure distance, the team created a dimensionally accurate 3D model of the massive tree. Using this, they confirmed that it is the tallest tree in Asia.

Guo Qinghua, a professor at Peking University’s Remote Sensing Institute, told the state newspaper. Global Times, the tree is interesting because its supporting roots are not completely buried underground. The tree also has a complex branching system that provides “an ideal microclimate and habitat for some endangered plants and animals,” the university said in a statement.

Currently the tallest tree in the world is a coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) at 381 feet (116 m) in Redwood National Park in California. The tree, estimated to be 600-800 years old and named after one of the titans in Greek mythology, Hyperion, was discovered in 2006.

Last year, the US Park Service decided to limit public access to Hyperion after visitors climbed a tree and left trash in the area, damaging surrounding bushes.
