Indicating that it will continue to operate in the cell phone market for a few more years, Sony announced this week a partnership with Qualcomm, a giant in the chipset universe. The collaboration will allow Sony to continue integrating Snapdragon processors into the company’s future mobile phone releases over the next few years.
Over the years, Sony has struggled with the phasing out of its smartphones and exiting the Brazilian market in 2019. However, this new agreement with Qualcomm shows the company’s determination to stay strong in the industry while defying adversity.
Qualcomm senior vice president O.H. Kwon said the partnership is a great opportunity for both companies, as future Sony smartphones may have capabilities that “help meet the needs of consumers around the world,” especially with devices based on Snapdragon processors.
Tsutomu Hamaguchi, Head of Mobile Communications at Sony Corporation, expressed his satisfaction with the positive feedback on the recently launched Xperia 1 V powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. He hopes the ongoing partnership with Qualcomm will allow Sony to offer a “premium and compelling experience” for its upcoming smartphones. .
Rumors indicate that Sony is considering bringing back the Xperia Compact line, possibly releasing its first foldable smartphone with a high-performance processor. However, this is not the only novelty that the company plans for the future.
Sony’s idea was to release the Xperia Pro-I II, which would focus even more on the camera, adopting two large photo sensors of 1 inch each, and could have greater integration with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 or even 8 Gen 3 chip. scheduled for release in October.
It remains to be seen what other models could benefit from this partnership, but more details are expected to emerge in the coming months. Xperia 1 V, Sony’s latest release, features a 6.5-inch 4K OLED screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card) and a powerful camera.
