This week saw the launch of Opera One, a new version of the veteran web browser with various exciting new features, including “islands of cards”, a new organizational feature that it has its own, but that is not its invention or exclusivity, and that if you are a Chrome user and you like the idea, you have it within your reach by installing the extension.

Before that, a short introduction to tab islands, which is nothing but Chrome tab groups, released by Google browser almost three years ago and with more than one incremental improvement, but with a slight aesthetic and practical improvement. Basically Opera automatically creates groups of bookmarks from open cards from an already open card.

It sounds a little confusing, but the truth is that it’s as simple as a jug: cards you open from an already open card (for example, if you open new cards with the links that this article contains) will be added to the same group; however, if you open a new tab using the new tab button, it will be independent of the others, that is, the operation will be the same as always. It is clear?

If not, you can try it in Opera first and then install the extension I’m going to recommend, one of many that exist in the same style for Chrome, although after trying a few I liked it the most because it practically copies the basic operations of Opera’s bookmark islands and adds some more customization options.

The extension is Tabius – Automatic card grouping assistant.

Tabius options include:

• Automatic grouping according to two criteria: opening from the same tab how it works in Opera or same domain.
• Assign a group name by domain or subdomain, as well as do not assign any nameonly one color (as in Opera, which saves space).
• Set the maximum number of cards per group.
• Delete groups when only one tab remains open
• auto collapse inactive card groups.

Do you want more? Advanced users have the option to set their own rules and blacklist. In short, in Tabius you have everything that Opera One’s bookmark islands offer and much more, but without unnecessary complications (if you don’t want to get bogged down in advanced options).
