Spanish company Voicemod has launched a new technology that allows users to change their voice in real time during calls or video games. The AI-based technology is already being used by more than 40 million people and includes 20 AI human characters with realistic voices, from a young woman to an elderly man.

To use this technology, users need to download the Voicemod app on their Mac or Windows systems, activate the microphone, and select one of the 20 available voices. The service is also available for Discord calls. The voices are trained by real and professional voice actors, and the company has been working on voice synthesis and audio features since 2014.

Voicemod CEO Jaime Bosch emphasized in an interview with CNBC the usefulness of technology to create a “creative community,” especially among shy people who may feel more comfortable communicating in a different voice.

This technology is considered a milestone in the world of conversational AI, but it requires significant computing power and talent to create and patent patented models of the algorithms behind it.

Investments in the company amounted to about 110 million Brazilian reais.

This is because Voicemod has managed to raise $23 million from various investors including Leadwind and Bitkraft Ventures. The cost corresponds to approximately 110 million reais at the current exchange rate. Investors, however, are aware of the risks associated with voice change technology, as revealed by the company’s CEO.

Voicemod is currently looking to find a watermarking solution to determine when voices were generated using modification systems, and is also in talks with other companies to standardize such systems.

Amid concerns about potential abuse of real-time voice change technology, Bosch stresses that security is a top priority for the company: “We think about it every day,” he said. As business moves faster than the laws, Voicemod is committed to ensuring the safe release of voice changer technology.
