If there is an indispensable application when I move by car, it is Waze: I prefer it to Google Maps (the official Android application), both in the application version and integrated into Android Auto. Waze has more breadcrumbs than just pinpointing the destination, some limitations like avoiding tolls or alerting you to the radars… well, it’s beyond gimmicks, Waze hides a set of secret codes that can change the app from bottom to top. Some are quite helpful and others may affect its work so it’s better to be sure before posting.

How to enter codes in Waze? Open the app and type in the navigation box (where it says ‘where are you going?’). In some cases the request is executed immediately, but in others it is necessary to restart the application.

Waze Codes

For convenience or just to try, you can enter these codes:

  • 2##2to enter or exit debug mode i.e. debugger mode.
  • ##@cctts, one of the most interesting: clears the TTS cache, ideal if the text-to-speech functionality is not working well. Thus, it will clear the cache and force the download from the server so that the latest version is available.
  • dbg@ttsEnables or disables debug mode for text-to-speech functionality.
  • ##@ttsenable or disable the text-to-speech function (optional, do this from the app in “Settings” > “Sound & voice”)
  • ##@asrenable or disable voice commands (something you can also do from settings)
  • ##@User nameshows your username in a popup (random name assigned if invited)
  • ##@engchange language to English (I tried entering ‘spa’ and it gives connection error)
  • ##@hebchange language to Hebrew (Waze comes from Israel)
  • ##@restorefav, reset your favorite places. While testing, I got the error that my device is not connected to the internet.
  • ##@coordshow (or stop showing) the GPS coordinates of your location
  • ##@debuglangReplaces strings translated as ‘Home’ or ‘Work’ to: [OK]
  • ##@debug speedshows the speed limit of the section regardless of the current speed (works only if you have speed limit enabled)
  • ##@rawgpsshows an additional icon (in yellow) with the current location
  • ##@trafficshows traffic lines on the route

Using Waze codes is at your own risk

These codes should be used with caution because of the changes they produce, for example if you have a problem you go to Waze support and their team will recommend one of them.

  • ##@provinceif the phone is using a wrong server, this code will allow to change it (valid in Israel)
  • ##@usesif the phone is using the wrong server, this code will allow you to change it (valid in the USA)
  • ##@otherif the phone is using the wrong server, this code will allow you to change it (valid for the rest of the world).
  • ##@reset appto reset the app and leave it freshly installed: delete favorites, account info… I tried and had to log in again.
