Since the beginning of 2022, Russian hackers have attacked Ukrainian resources with at least several types of malware.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine.
“The Russian Federation is an aggressive country that unjustly engages in aggression against Ukraine, not only in our territory, but also in cyberspace,” the statement said.
The State Special Communications Service emphasized that for the past eight years, Russian hackers have been waging war against Ukraine in cyberspace, and their activities are constantly increasing.
Yes, cyberattacks today are a full-fledged component of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Since the beginning of the year, Russian military hackers have been particularly actively attacking Ukrainian information systems.
The purpose of hostile cyberattacks is to damage and destroy Ukrainian information systems, destroy data, deny Ukrainian citizens access to public services and destabilize the situation in the country, instilling panic and distrust in the government.
According to the State Special Communications Service, since the beginning of the year, Russia has launched at least several malware families in Ukraine. These include WhisperGate / WhisperKill, CaddyWiper, Hermetic Wiper, Industroyer2, DoubleZero and others.
Also, with the help of cyber attacks, Russia wants to create a humanitarian disaster in Ukraine, because hackers are trying to disrupt the work of the energy sector, emergency services, communications, logistics.
State Special Communications Agency, “Russian hackers are a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the whole world. Ukrainian information resources are an important target for the Russian army. Proven methods of cyber-attacks against Ukrainian resources are then used in other democracies of the world.” Service said.
It is stated that cyber attacks aiming to harm Ukrainian resources can affect the operation of information systems in other countries, since there is no border in cyberspace.
For example, on the eve of the February 24 invasion, an attack on the Viasat satellite network aimed at disrupting communications for Ukrainian users affected several European Union member states.
According to the State Special Communications Service, the information systems of countries and institutions that helped Ukraine and the Ukrainians during the war are subject to cyber-attack.
In addition to military hackers, attacks on Ukraine and other democracies involve politically motivated activists led by the Russian government.
The State Special Communications Service assured that Ukraine used all available resources for protection. The best domestic and foreign experts participated in the cyber defense of Ukrainian information systems.
“Governments and commercial companies of most democracies in the world are helping us. We are grateful to everyone and appreciate this help. Thanks to this, we are strong and enduring today. But that is not enough, because it will be offensive. Don’t stop like that,” the service said.
Therefore, all countries must join forces to stop the aggressor, deprive him of the ability to attack and hold him accountable for his actions.
It is emphasized that only sanctions, coordinated work, awareness of government institutions, business world and citizens can help this goal and peace in cyberspace.
As Ukrinform reports, cybercriminals are sending new letters en masse with a virus that steals data and frightens people with a chemical attack.
