At least 88 people were arrested during the attacks. LGBT pride held this Sunday in Istanbul, where there are 40 detainees, and in Izmir, where, according to the organizers, 48 people were arrested.
Police closed down several downtown areas to try to prevent the parade, but hundreds of activists took an alternate route and read the statement after flying a rainbow flag over a building.
Meanwhile, at least 48 protesters have been detained in Izmir in the west of the country, protest organizers also report.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his entourage have repeatedly expressed their rejection of the LGBT community and every year they try to stop the Pride Parade.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul reiterated his refusal to sanction the event due to “threats to family life”. Consequently, various events associated with the month of Pride, such as a picnic or a film screening, were banned.
