Like other chip giants, Nvidia stares Europe in the eye with a tantalizing eye. CEO Jensen Huang has already promised the European Commission that his company will “very likely” build a factory.

Last Friday, Huang was the guest of Thierry Breton, the European Commission’s Commissioner for the Internal Market. During this call, possible investments by Nvidia in Europe were discussed, with Huang indicating that it is “very likely” that the company will eventually set up manufacturing facilities on the European continent.

“Nvidia wants to be a global international company. Who can think of a better place to invest?” European Times quotes the CEO of Nvidia as saying. If Huang keeps his promise, Nvidia would complete Intel, TSMC and AMD, among others. The construction plans of the competitor colleagues are much further.

Now that Intel and Germany have agreed on the funding, construction of the factory in Magdeburg can begin and another location in Poland is to be added. TSMC is also considering establishing its first major European chip fab in Germany. AMD wants to invest 135 million euros in a research and development center in Ireland.

At Nvidia, it remains a declaration of intent for the time being: A location or a budget do not seem to have been set yet. Nevertheless, Europe is also welcoming Nvidia with open arms. Nvidia is a very interesting company because artificial intelligence development requires robust GPUs and the Taiwanese company is still the absolute ruler here.

With the Chips Act, the European Union wants to relocate up to twenty percent of global chip production to its own territory in order to become more independent from the USA and Asia. Then it is good that the large chip companies themselves are proactively looking for locations in Europe.
