A team of scientists embarked on an unusual mission to search for the remains of an interstellar object that crashed near Papua New Guinea in 2014, possibly spewing material from another star system into the Pacific Ocean.
Led by Avi Loeb, a renowned Harvard astronomer, the expedition aims to collect all the remaining fragments of the extraterrestrial meteorite using deep-sea magnetic instruments.
While the team has already found intriguing magnetic spheres, steel debris, wires and volcanic ash, they have yet to find conclusive evidence of interstellar material in the region. But Loeb remains hopeful that fragments of the mysterious object called Interstellar Meteor 1 (IM1) will be detected.
The IM1 research reportedly provides scientists with a unique opportunity to study objects in interstellar space through a microscope in the future.
