Microsoft has made new virtual machines available for download on its website from Windows 11 Trial focused on developers. These virtual machines are available for four virtualization platforms: hyper v (Windows), VMware (Windows), Oracle virtual box (Windows, macOS and Linux) and Desktop Parallels (macOS).

Regarding the virtualization platforms mentioned above, Hyper-V is already free. included in Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows 10 and 11. VMware Workstation Pro is a paid virtualization solution, while VMware Workstation Player is paid. free for home use. Oracle VirtualBox is a virtualization solution. free and open source. Parallels Desktop is a paid virtualization solution for macOS.

According to Microsoft, virtual machines bring Windows 11 Enterprise Trial (22H2) and developer tools like Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition preset, i.e. Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2 included and with Ubuntu installed, Windows terminal installed and enabled as the default command line utility, and Developer Mode enabled in the operating system settings.

An important detail is that virtual machines have an expiration date: September 13, 2023. After this date, expired VMs will display a desktop notification, the desktop background will change to a black background, and the VM will automatically shut down every hour. Updated versions of VMs with a new expiration date should be available to Microsoft after they expire.
