Despite the debacle of plans for the Metaverse, It seems that Meta continues to bet on virtual reality and therefore on Quest, its VR headset division, something that wasn’t so obvious late last year. Recall that in October of last year, the presentation of the company’s results was a huge blow and also a confirmation that the excessive commitment to its virtual world in the current context was a mistake of epic proportions. We said it back then, in the medium to long term it could have a long run, but in the short term it was going downhill without brakes.
As a result of the economic collapse, Meta was forced to undergo a tough process of cuts, which affected employees, departments and projects. So, for example, we learned that the company is abandoning its smartwatch project, which it has been working on for a long time and which, if deployed correctly, could become an interesting option for consumers. Maybe they will restore it at some point, but at least at this point we won’t know.
We must add to this situation failure in relation to the image it signified the departure of John Carmack companies. Recall that the co-creator of Doom and the father of Quake became the CTO of Oculus VT in August 2013, a year before this company was bought by Meta (then Facebook). From then until December of last year, he was one of the main managers of the company’s VR area. So his departure seemed to be another worrying sign for the Quest family.
However, a few weeks ago, the company introduced Quest 3, a mixed reality viewer with which Meta intends to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. Perhaps knowing that those from Cupertino are committed to this market, even if it is with a proposal that is completely different from what has been seen so far, made them consider that more travel than it might have seemed a few months ago.
And today we know about another news, also very interesting. As we can read on his official blog, Meta has announced Meta Quest+, a VR video game subscription service for its viewers. With a monthly fee of €7.99 or an annual fee of €59.99, subscribers will have access to two new titles each month, which will be permanently added to their library as long as they keep the service.
This proposal is quite far removed from the proposal of Xbox Game Pass and It looks a lot more inspired by the PlayStation Plus model than Sony’s service evolved., just to make it look more like Microsoft. Under other conditions, the Meta Quest+ could become an extra element for those people who are thinking about getting a VR headset. However, being so limited in what it offers, at least in this first phase, makes it less attractive, at least in my opinion. And it’s a shame, because a slightly more ambitious design and with the same price could make a big difference and accelerate the adoption of virtual reality.
