Four members of the NASA mission, for which they will spend a year cooped up in a terrestrial habitat simulating Mars, woke up for the first time this Monday in a 158-square-meter 3D-printed enclosure located at the Johnson Space Center.

Four volunteers – a team consisting of two scientists, an engineer and a doctor – entered an enclosure built at NASA’s Houston Center on Sunday, where they will spend 378 days locked up.

The mission is the first of three planned simulations of the surface of Mars called CHAPEA (similar to the crew health and performance study).

Despite the lack of gravity, the researchers will simulate the challenges of a human mission to Mars, including lack of resources, equipment failures, communication delays and other environmental stressors.

The habitat has a living area with four small bedrooms, a living room, a place to grow food, and an infirmary. In addition, there is an open area that simulates the surface of Mars.

“The simulation will allow us to collect data on physical and cognitive capabilities to gain more insight into the potential impact of long-duration missions to Mars on crew health and performance,” Grace Douglas said in a statement released by NASA. .

This information will help NASA make decisions about the development and planning of a future human mission to Mars.

Participants were selected by phone. They include Kelly Huston, a research scientist with experience in modeling human disease, and Ross Brockwell, a civil engineer and public works administrator.

The mission is completed by Nathan Jones, a certified emergency physician, and Anka Celariu, a US Navy microbiologist.
