U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned last Friday that Some delays or cancellations may occur on flights from 1 July.in case the latest passenger planes haven’t updated their altimeters to combat 5G interference, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) claims that 5G C-band signals can interfere with the radio wave emitters that passenger planes use to measure ride height.widely used mainly by pilots who require guidance in low visibility conditions.

While airlines are not required to install new equipment until February 2024, passenger aircraft that are not certified for 5G C-band signals by July 1 will not be allowed to land in certain downtime situations.

Most of the US domestic fleet is ready, more than 80% of aircraft have been upgraded, but about 65% of international aircraft flying in the US still need to be refurbished to bring them up to standard.

Most companies will be able to adapt to the regulations in a timely manner

In the US, most airlines say they expect a full fleet renewal by July 1, though Delta Air Lines and JetBlue are unable to meet that deadline with 190 aircraft and 17 aircraft, respectively, on hold. The trade association Airlines for America blamed global supply chain problems on the difficulty in meeting deadlines.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and carriers AT&T and Verizon faced challenges with 5G expansion in 2021 when the FAA initially raised concerns about 5G C-band interference with aircraft equipment.

For now, the only flights likely to experience failures are those that do not have 5G interference avoidance equipment on board and will land in poor visibility conditions. For example, a JetBlue spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that there could be “limited impact” in Boston during low visibility days beginning July 1.
