John Goodenough, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and inventor of the lithium-ion battery that revolutionized modern life, has died at the age of 100.

As reported by Ukrinform, Yahoo News reported it.

“The world has lost an incredible mind and a generous spirit. He (Goodinaf – Ed.) will be truly missed in the science and engineering community, but he left a lasting legacy that will inspire innovators and researchers for generations to come,” said University of Texas Chancellor Sharon Wood.

Goodenough was reported to have died on Sunday at the university where he worked as an engineering professor.

Goodenough is said to be the oldest winner of the Nobel Prize. At the age of 97, he shared the 2019 Chemistry Prize for the invention of the lithium-ion battery with British Stanley Whittingham and Japanese Akira Yoshino.

Looking for an alternative energy source during the oil crisis of the 1970s, Whittingham found a way to harness the potential energy of lithium. However, the battery he designed was too unstable to be used.

Goodenough developed Whittingham’s prototype by changing the metal compound and doubling the potential energy of the battery to four volts.

This paved the way for much more powerful and long-lasting batteries in the future.
