ThoughtSpot and Mode join forces to attack Tableau and other major BI platforms. With generative AI, of course.

If you can’t beat them, buy them. ThoughSpot applies this proven business recipe with its $200 million acquisition of BI platform Mode. A good fashion deal that would have a market value of $83 million. Both parties hope to finalize all the details by the end of this year.

Win win

The takeover of fashion is also interesting for ThoughtSpot. The company has big ambitions in the market for everything related to data analysis and visualization, but for now the platform has been overshadowed by big names like Microsoft BI, Tableau and Looker. ThoughtSpot wants to excel at enabling non-technical users to quickly find the right data. The company sometimes refers to itself as “Google for data.”

Among other things, the mode offers the possibility of writing the code to analyze data and display the results in the same interface without having to switch tabs. Above all, ThoughtSpot hopes to open the gates to generative AI. Records created with ThoughtSpot’s search tools using the Mode interface to guide users through simple questions to points of interest.

Sudheesh Nair, CEO of ThoughtSpot, also makes this ambition clear in the press release. Bold statements are not shy away from. “Unless you’re burying your head in the sand, every executive at every company knows they need to figure out how to use generative AI to be more responsive and provide customers with personalized, tailored experiences. If you don’t, admit defeat.”

Even with Nair, a mockery of the competition is possible. Specifically, Salesforce’s Tableau gets the full layer. “For too long, data teams have been held back by the latest generation of outdated data visualization tools like Tableau, forcing them to endlessly customize and update dashboards. Now is the time to rethink business intelligence if you want to get the most value from your investments in the modern data stack.”
