Governor of Florida Ron DeSantissubmitted on Monday its most detailed plan yet fence the southern border of the United States, as he tries to catch up against Donald Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
At an event in Eagle Pass, Texas, on the Rio Grande’s border with Mexico, DeSantis lashed out at Trump, grouping him with other presidents who he said had taken no steps to stop the flow of migrants in the border area. “There is no excuse for this,” he said. “Do your job,” he said.
The governor, who announced his presidential candidacy last month, struggled to gain momentum against the former president, who is up for a new term in the White House. National opinion polls show him trailing former President Trump by more than 20 percentage points.

As part of its border plan, DeSantis will deliver ending the so-called “catch and release”.» and detain migrants crossing the border until the date of the hearing; refuse entry to any of them applying for political asylum; and will tax the remittances of migrants living in the country illegally to pay for the construction of the border wall.
It will also take steps to end so-called “birthright citizenship,” which allows children of immigrants born in the United States to become United States citizens and also allows state and local authorities to enforce federal immigration law.
In addition, he vowed to use US law enforcement across the border if necessary to stem the flow of fentanyl and other drugs, saying that as president he would unilaterally issue an executive order to take action without waiting for action by Congress.
Trump also assured that he would end of birthright citizenship and continue the tough immigration policies he introduced as president. His campaign accused DeSantis on Monday of “copying and pasting” the former president’s political agenda.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, criticized DeSantis’ plan, calling it a “political stunt.” “They are nothing more than an echo of the same callous and heartless policies of the Trump administration that have crippled our immigration system,” he said.
