In a statement released on Tuesday (27), Baidua leading Chinese search engine provider, announced a new breakthrough in its approach to chatbots, surpassing the popular ChatGPT developed by OpenAI in several important ways.

According to Baidu, the launch Ernie 3.5the latest version of his AI model outperforms ChatGPT in terms of all-round skills, and also outperforms GPT-4 itself in several Chinese-centric capabilities.

This statement is based on a test conducted by China Science Daily, a well-known Chinese government journal, using datasets that include leading benchmarks such as AGIEval and C-Eval, considered benchmarks for evaluating the performance of artificial intelligence models.

Baidu’s revelation comes amid a global backdrop of increased interest and enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, initially fueled by the success of ChatGPT and spreading to China, with many local companies announcing their own competing products.

Baidu was the first major Chinese tech company to introduce an artificial intelligence product as an alternative to ChatGPT with the launch of Ernie Bot in March this year. Built on top of the previous AI model, Ernie 3.0, Ernie Bot has been testing with limited guest access over the past three months. Other Chinese tech giants such as Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings have also recently announced their own AI models.

In addition to outperforming its competitors, Baidu emphasized that its new model has higher learning and inference efficiency, which puts it in an advantageous position for faster and more cost-effective future iterations.
