Archaeologists excavating at Pompeii have made an exciting discovery regarding the history of pizza. In one of the frescoes they discovered, they noticed a picture of a dish that may have been the ancient ancestor of pizza. This discovery confirms the assumption that varieties of this dish existed in ancient times.

The ancient city of Pompeii was covered with ash and lava by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This terrible natural disaster allowed us to preserve many artifacts and frescoes, providing us with unique insights into life at that time.

Archaeologists discovered the image of a round cake with various fillings in the fresco. A glass of wine is seen next to it, and next to the food lie pomegranates and dates. You may also see something resembling pesto sauce on the side of the cake.

Although modern pizza is often associated with tomatoes and mozzarella, which appeared in Europe after the discovery of the Americas, the word “pizza” appears in Latin records as early as 997 AD. The new discovery often confirms the assumption that pizza existed long before this time.
