Google stopped developing its augmented reality glasses, the Iris project, according to recent reports. The decision to stop the project was made against the background of the presentation of similar products by competitors Meta and Apple.
Officially unveiled last year during Google I/O, Projeto Iris promised a version with translation features and another with transcription and navigation features.. However, current reports indicate that these versions are no longer in development.
During the development of Project Iris, Google faced a series of layoffs and strategic changes.. Clay Bavor, Google’s head of VR/AR, left the company four months ago, and Kurt Ackley, a distinguished engineer who worked on the project, is now listed as “retired” on his LinkedIn profile.

Google acquired glasses company AR North in 2020, and many of North’s employees, including co-founders Stephen Lake, Matthew Bailey, and Aaron Grant, still work for Google. According to reports, an early version of the Iris was very similar to the Focals, North’s first device.
Google shifted its energy to software development
With the demise of the Iris project, Google has focused its efforts on software development rather than hardware. The company is working on a “micro XR” platform that can be licensed to other headset makers, as Android does to the wider phone ecosystem.
Despite the end of the Iris project, Google may still have a presence in the augmented reality headset market. According to sources, Google glasses became the basis for a headset being developed in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm. In February, the three companies made a vague announcement about working together on a new mixed reality platform.
Google originally planned to release an augmented reality headset in 2024. During Google I/O 2023 last month, Google VP Samir Samat said the company would “reveal more” about its collaboration with Samsung this year.
