WhatsApp does not give up on its effort to be the reference app when it comes to making video calls. Meta’s app is starting to update in beta for Windows. The main innovation? Call support for up to 32 participants.
The number is still a long way from the 100 participants Google Meet allows, but this update to the app on Windows is a pretty goodwill statement: Meta asks us to think about WhatsApp when we go to group video calls.
The plan to conquer WhatsApp and video calls
The strategy is not new. WhatsApp has spent years increasing the number of participants in video calls. In 2020, the web service limit was increased to 50 participants with Messenger Rooms and WhatsApp Web integration. The strategy for the mobile app is clearly differentiated: In the same year, we could only make video calls with eight people over the phone.
Two years later, video call links were added to the mobile application. In addition Increasing the participant limit to 32, these links allowed people not on our contact list to join video calls. role oriented meetings Work in a business environment even though it’s accessible to everyone without the need for WhatsApp Business.
At the beginning of the year, WhatsApp for Mobile started to be updated with mobile screen sharing functionality so that other participants can view our phone’s content from their own phones. But stellar gesture was the new native app for macOS. Optimized for Apple Silicon, Rebuilt in Catalyst and adapted to the interface of Apple’s operating system. In the kingdom of Facetime, WhatsApp continued to make a name for itself with the news it made.
On the Windows app side, WhatsApp has been somewhat forgotten compared to Web. Without great news in recent months, it still didn’t allow video calls with more than eight participants. Starting today, users who own the beta version of this app will start to see the participant limit (gradually) increase to 32.
Deployment of this beta is expected to end in the next few weeks and this functionality is expected to be implemented in the stable release in the coming months.
