HMD Global has announced the launch of the Nokia G42 5G, a mid-range mobile phone that boasts a right to repair that, until recently, has been impossible to fulfill, no matter how “right” it claims to be, given the way the current industry operates and planned technological obsolescence which practices generally in an unsustainable model that accumulates more and more gadgets increase in technological waste.
HMD is following in the footsteps of the G22, one of three smartphones it brought to MWC in Barcelona, and the most interesting is a new line of phones designed from the ground up. be repairable and have a longer lifespan. The Nokia G42 5G follows this strategy as it has a repair capability A quick fixwhich allows the user to easily replace the most problematic elements of the mobile, damaged screens, bent charging ports, dead batteries or broken back covers.
Repairs are carried out in cooperation with iFixit, which provides practical instructions for repairs and spare parts at very reasonable prices for what some official services cost. We’re not naming names, even though we believe it’s on everyone’s mind. If your screen breaks, it’s almost better to throw away the phone because you’ll be crazy about the repair cost.
In the rest, the Nokia G42 5G is based on a 6.56 inch displaywith a native resolution of 1612 x 720 pixels and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Its engine is the Qualcomm SoC model Snapdragon 480+, supplemented in configurations with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage capacity.
Supports broadband networks 5G and wireless connection Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. Its camera system features a triple main sensor (50 MP general + 2 MP depth and 2 MP macro) and an 8 MP front camera for selfies.
It supports 20W fast charging and promises to retain 80% of battery capacity after 800 full charge cycles, equivalent to four years of USB Type-C charging. It has a mono speaker, two microphones and two other components that the industry trend usually removes: 3.5 mm audio jack and microSD card reader.
The terminal is already available on Nokia.com in black or purple, in configurations of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, and including wired earphones for a price 249 euros. Nokia offers accessories such as a transparent case for 24.99 euros. Repair kits and replacement parts will be available through iFixit.com for prices ranging from €50 per screen to €20 per charging port.
To say that the terminal comes pre-installed with Android 13 and the provider promises three years of security updates and two major system updates. At the patch level (which we wholeheartedly applaud), it should be accompanied by extended software support to prevent bits from becoming obsolete. That’s why we bet, but in the meantime, you know, alternative ROMs are a strong point of the Android platform.
