Channel 24 sought to understand the challenges RuTube faced. According to the latest data, allegedly the attack was made possible due to the leaking of access codes.

Not subject to recovery

According to the Russian branch of The Village, citing its own source close to the RuTube team, the situation was much more serious than originally thought.

Briefly remember:

• At around 5 am on May 9, an attack on RuTube began.
• At seven in the morning, service representatives reported this on Telegram.
• Later in the day, various statements said that recovery efforts are underway, video content is not affected, the situation is under control, user data is not affected, etc.
• At 20:04, there was another broadcast in the telegram claiming “RuTube has been ordered”. It was as if it was a planned and costly attack designed to “disrupt the victory parade and festive fireworks.” The press service has already announced the upcoming broadcast of the racist meeting on the record.
• And the site is still not working. At the time of writing, 33 hours have passed since the beginning of the attack and you can still see only one thing on RuTube – the message “Attention! Site technical work in progress. Site hacked. Currently under control. User data saved.”

According to The Village, things are very bad. According to the source, The site’s source code has been completely removed and the video service is “unrecoverable”. RuTube still does not know whether the hacker still has access to the system, but continues to claim that the video content was not affected by the attack.

Meanwhile, the IT service Habr has published the data that resulted in the attack. More than 75 percent of major release databases and infrastructure and more than 90 percent of backups and clusters for database recovery were affected. The main challenge in the recovery process seems to be that the infrastructure consists of hundreds of servers, each of which must be manually restored, gradually removing the effects of the intervention.

The RuTube developers themselves deny this data.

Information about the loss of the source code of the site is not correct. Indeed, we encountered the most powerful cyberattack in RuTube history. It’s important to understand that video hosting is one petabyte of archive data and hundreds of servers. Recovery takes more time than engineers initially thought. However, gloomy predictions have nothing to do with this situation: the source code is available, the library is intact. The process of restoring file system segments of remote environments and databases on some servers is in progress.

It is possible that the service team is just trying to hide the information and takes the time to come up with a solution that doesn’t really exist.

RuTube turned to Mikhail Fedorov

Yesterday, May 9, the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov joked with Lukashenko about the downfall of the Russian site, adapting the famous meme to the situation:

And now I will show you where the attack on Rutube was prepared. And if the servers had not been disconnected 6 hours before the parade – four servers, now I will show the motherboards I will bring – they would have shown everyone this nonsense,
– wrote the minister.

And already in the evening, Mr. Fedorov described the situation around RuTube as “depropaganda”: “Depropaganda continues. This is not a cyber attack, but a special operation to improve your IT infrastructure.”

Then something unexpected happened: RuTube spoke Ukrainian! The same telegraph channel broadcast a message to the Minister of Ukraine, which began with the words: “We want to explain it to some who are particularly happy about RuTube’s failure.”

It should be noted that the PR employees of the service are clearly ill-prepared and do not know that Mikhail Fedorov broadcasts his personal channel not only in Ukrainian, but also sometimes in Russian, some publications that are not related to his work as a minister.

By the way, Fedorov himself has already answered: “Unemployed Rutube spoke Ukrainian on the second day. We will continue to work until the Kremlin speaks” – He wrote.
