Ukraine’s energy sector has become one of the most important targets of the enemy, which is targeted by cyber attacks as well as physical attacks using various weapons.

Referring to the press service of the Ministry of Energy, Ukrinform emphasized this at the meeting of the National Cyber Security Cluster of Farid Safarov, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.

“Energy has become the second bridgehead to wage war, and cyberattacks are a full-fledged component of this aggression. Ukraine’s energy sector was subject to Russian cyberattacks until February 24, 2022, but with the start of an all-out invasion, the number of attacks increased significantly. Over the past year, the transmission system operator’s operational security center has registered more than 1.5 million related blocking attempts to attack the industry.” said.

According to him, the enemy primarily attacks distribution system operators and transmission system operators.

Safarov emphasized that the Ministry of Energy works in areas such as cyber defense and cyber diplomacy in the field of cyber security and also coordinates the activities of critical infrastructure operators in these areas. This coordination is carried out in cooperation with specialized agencies such as the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Special Intelligence Service and aims to protect people, technological processes and information technologies, as well as neutralize various sources of cyber threats.

In addition, a draft order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has been developed “on certain issues related to the activity of branch cybersecurity centers of the Ukrainian fuel and energy complex”, which plans to designate the NEC “Ukrenergo” cyber centers. and “Naftogaz of Ukraine” JSC as branch centers of the cybersecurity of the electric power industry and oil and gas complexes of Ukraine.
