The U.S. Supreme Court concluded this Friday its review of the Joe Biden government’s plan to write off the student debt of millions of university students.

In a ruling by the court’s conservative majority, opposed by three progressive judges, the court found that the Biden administration had no right to approve such measures.

The plan was proposed by the Democratic leader to ease some of the economic hardship caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, but has been challenged by the attorneys general of several Republican-ruled states.

In the decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the judges sided with the state of Missouri, which argued that the debt relief measure would hurt the revenue of the state agency that administers student loans.

In this sense, Roberts explained that US law allows Education Secretary Miguel Cardone to “make modest adjustments and additions to existing rules (…) rather than transform them.”

These modifications, according to Roberts, created a “fundamentally different plan for debt relief.”

In a dissenting opinion written by Judge Elena Kagan and supported by Judges Sonia Sotomayor and Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the three progressive judges argue that “in every way the court today exceeds its proper and limited role in the government of our country.” .
