Brazil’s High Electoral Commission voted overwhelmingly in favor on Friday ban former President Jair Bolsonaro from holding public office until 2030, for accusations that far-right nationalist abused his power in a tense election last year.

Four judges vote in favor of sentencing Bolsonarofor abuse of political power and misuse of the media when no one did.

Judge Carmen Lucia Antunes of the Higher Electoral Tribunal (TSE) found him guilty and thus formed a majority that tends to deprive him of all political rights for eight years.

“I want to say that I fully support the speaker,” Antunes said at the beginning of the reading of his vote, which joined three others who already considered Bolsonaro guilty of abuse of power in his election campaign, the one he lost to progressive Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Thus, Antunes referred to the vote of Judge Benedito Gonçalves, rapporteur of the trial, who asked for Bolsonaro to be sentenced to a meeting he called with fifty foreign ambassadors at the official residence of the President, July 18, 2022, at disqualify the electoral system and sow doubt on the impartiality of the judiciary at a time when he was seeking re-election.

Although a majority of four out of seven votes belongs to Judge Antunes, any member of the TSE may change their mind before the end of the trial and the official announcement of the results.
