Titan: OceanGate asked to use remote vehicle after disappearance

OceanGate, which owns the Titan submersible, contacted the owner of the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that found the remains a few days later on June 22, just hours after the day it disappeared on June 18, to begin searching.

If the preparation took four days, then in any case, as soon as logistical problems allowed.

Edward Cassano, CEO of ROV Pelagic Research Services, proposed this Friday at a press conference in East Aurora, New York, the “sequence of events” following the completion of the damaged Titan recovery tasks, which took about ten days of hard work and coordination between experts from different companies.

The Titan likely exploded on June 18, shortly after starting a descent into the depths of the ocean with five people aboard on a risky expedition to see the wreck of the Titanic, and US and Canadian authorities are investigating why.

Cassano, who was unable to provide details about the recovery efforts or the objects recovered from those investigations, said his workers are demobilizing today after a mission in which a Pelagic submersible called the Odysseus played a key role, during which the remains of a Titan nearby were discovered. with the place where the Titanic lies.

He explained that OceanGate contacted Pelagic (a company based in East Aurora) on June 18 at 5:45 pm local time, and that same night, Cassano met with the director of operations, who asked him to “activate the deep water ROV system.” Odysseus”, initiating the mobilization of his apparatus and his specialists.

THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE SEARCH WEIGHED 31 TONS

This mobilization involved three U.S. military aircraft, which delivered all the necessary materials, weighing about 70,000 pounds, or 31 tons, to the site where the Titanic is located, to be integrated with the emergency team of “at least ten ships and aircraft.” in search of the Titan.

In the early hours of June 22, the Odyssey “began to sink to the bottom of the ocean, and shortly after arrival we found the remains of the Titan submersible,” said an excited Cassano, so “recovery was the salvation.” The Coast Guard informed the families of the victims.

The Titan crash killed five crew members: Pakistani millionaire businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, a 19-year-old student; British explorer Hamish Harding; French explorer Paul-Henri Nargolet and CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush.

Since then, a team made up of Horizon Arctic, a Canadian crane ship, Pelagic, and other companies such as Deep Energy, which lost an ROV in the operation, have collaborated to “retrieve all objects of interest” from Titan, which were transferred this Wednesday. in San Juan de Terranova (Canada), Cassano said.

On the same day, the US Coast Guard said that there may be human remains among the wreckage, which will be analyzed by “medical workers” from that country, the matter is still being investigated, and no new details have been provided.

When asked if Pelagic knew about OceanGate’s activities, Cassano succinctly replied that he did, because the people involved in seabed exploration “represent a very small community.” as much solidarity with the company as possible, as well as with the dead crew members.

“I have no opinion, there is an important investigation going on. Explorers, people who want to go to the ocean, to its depths… It is very attractive, we, of course, share these desires. Our company is dedicated to supporting deep sea exploration and science, which is why exploration is our passion and joy.” EFE
