China’s YMTC has bought advanced NAND flash manufacturing machines, which it can no longer use due to sanctions. She wants the manufacturers to buy back the devices.

Chinese company YMTC has developed advanced 3D NAND for SSDs. Such memory chips are complex and require sophisticated equipment. YMTC recently lost access to it. The US restricted exports to the flash maker and prevented US companies and companies using US technology from supplying products, software or services to YMTC.

No support

That gets YMTC in trouble. The company had already bought some complex machines for its factories before the sanctions, but without the necessary support from the manufacturers, it seems untenable to continue using them. That’s why Chen Nanxiang, the head of the company, is now asking the manufacturers of the machines to buy them back.

This question can be welcomed, since there is a shortage of machines on the market. It is not clear to what extent such a transaction falls under the sanctions. In any case, YMTC itself can no longer buy new machines, which puts Chinese 3D NAND production at risk. It is very unlikely that the company will be able to produce advanced storage for PCIe 5.0 SSDs, for example, in the future.
