A TSMC supplier fell victim to a ransomware attack that also stole information. According to TSMC, no sensitive customer information was collected.
The LockBit ransomware gang claimed late last week that they had stolen data from TSMC. The world’s largest chip manufacturer denies having been hacked itself, but refers to Kinmax Technology. This is a supplier with which TSMC exchanges data. In addition, both companies do not deny that data was stolen, although important customer information such as chip designs would remain safe.
According to TSMC, server configuration data was stolen. LockBit itself speaks of login data for the manufacturer’s IT network. As usual, the criminals want a ransom. They are demanding $70 million and will release the stolen information if they don’t receive it. It’s unclear if any of those affected intend to put the money on the table.
TSMC emphasizes that the hack has no impact on production. The company can count AMD, Nvidia and Apple among its customers, and even Intel relies on TSMC production lines for some of its chips. The manufacturer also states that cooperation with suppliers in the area of safety is a priority. Police forces are said to be investigating the attack.
The hack is a good example of a big trend. Large companies are increasingly orderly about their security, but they are part of a complex supply chain. Hackers therefore take the path of least resistance and try to get hold of sensitive information by attacking these providers.
Lockbit is a major criminal organization that has recently made victims in our country as well. The criminals had also previously attacked a children’s hospital, but eventually made a somewhat surprising apology.
