Iranian journalist and activist Golroj Irai was sentenced to five years in prison after an appeal against his sentence to seven years in prison for participating in protests after death in custody a young Kurd of Iranian origin Mahs Amini and for “attacking national security”.

“Golroy Irai, one of those arrested during the national uprising and is in Evin prison for 280 dayssentenced to five years in prison, confiscation of a mobile phone and other additional punishments, ”the message on her Twitter page says.

The journalist was arrested in September 2022 at home, shortly after demonstrations began over the death of Amini, who was arrested in the capital, Tehran, for allegedly wearing the veil badly.

Irai is also the wife of activist Arash Sadeqi. arrested in connection with the protestsalthough he was later released.

The head of the Iranian judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, said last week that the country’s courts have so far considered over 20,000 cases related to protests and argued that the cases of the “repentant” were separated from those who participated in the riots in the face of the amnesty process by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
