Iranian journalist and activist Golroj Irai was sentenced to five years in prison after an appeal against his sentence to seven years in prison for participating in protests after death in custody a young Kurd of Iranian origin Mahs Amini and for “attacking national security”.

Irai is also the wife of activist Arash Sadeqi. arrested in connection with the protestsalthough he was later released.

The head of the Iranian judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, said last week that the country’s courts have so far considered over 20,000 cases related to protests and argued that the cases of the “repentant” were separated from those who participated in the riots in the face of the amnesty process by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian authorities relieved security forces of all blame for Amini’s deathalthough they acknowledged certain excesses during the crackdown, which resulted in around 500 deaths, according to balance sheets provided by various non-governmental organizations.
