If you want to get hold of a Vision Pro in 2024, you may have to be quick. Apple will only release its long-awaited AR headset in limited quantities.
Apple would have ordered Chinese manufacturing company Luxshare to produce fewer than 400,000 units of the headset by 2024, the Financial Times writes. Two suppliers are also gearing up for production of 130,000 to 150,000 units each. Such numbers are only a fraction compared to the production targets for new iPhones and are also well below Apple’s original ambitions.
The iPhone maker initially appeared to be targeting one million units of the Vision Pro in its debut year. Apple is therefore significantly reducing production even before the headset is released. Apple may be aware that the Vision Pro will appeal to a niche audience, partly due to the high price point. Or was Apple influenced by Gartner’s recent report, which gave mixed reality bad marks? Apple also does not want to comment on the news for the time being.
Anyway, the launch of the Apple Vision Pro is getting closer. The AR headset was enthusiastically announced by Tim Cook at WWDC and the first practical reviews were positive about the quality of the hardware. Now it’s up to developers to design applications that leverage the potential of mixed reality. The Vision Pro is scheduled to go on sale in early 2024 for $3,499; European prices are not yet known.
