The sun emits a powerful solar flare

The sun emitted a powerful solar flare that peaked at 19:14 ET on July 2, 2023. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which monitors the Sun continuously, captured the image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar flares can affect radio communications, power grids, navigation signals and pose a risk to spacecraft and astronauts.

This torch is classified as X1.0 torch. While the X class represents the strongest flares, the number gives more information about power.

To learn how this type of space weather can affect Earth, visit NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the U.S. government’s official source for space weather forecasts, clocks, warnings and alerts.

NASA operates as the research arm of the nation’s space weather efforts. NASA constantly monitors the Sun and our space environment with a fleet of spacecraft that study everything from the Sun’s activity to the solar atmosphere, particles and magnetic fields in space around Earth.
