OAS again deploys electoral mission in Guatemala

An observation mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) will again be deployed to Guatemala, the organization said on Monday.

The decision came after the country’s Constitutional Court ordered the country’s top election commission to review the counts of the first round of the presidential election.

On Saturday, the Constitutional Court ordered the High Electoral Court to review the results of the first round of the June 25 presidential election, shortly after one of the favorites’ party and its allies contested the results.

“A technical team consisting of observers, observers and specialists in the organization and technology of the elections will go to Guatemala,” the OAS said in a statement, which did not specify the date when they would arrive in the Central American country.

“The mission will be present at the new elections and will continue to collect relevant information in connection with the holding of the second round of the presidential elections on August 20,” the OAS added, adding that these second exercises were not included in its calendar.

Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal later said it would begin checking the results of the vote on Tuesday in response to a weekend ruling by the Constitutional Court.

Citizens today protested in front of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal against the measure to suspend the results of the general election.

Scholars, religious and various circles in Guatemala, including the international community accredited in the country, demanded on Monday that the will of the population, expressed by voting in the June 25 general elections, be respected.

The call for respect for democracy by various sectors came after the Constitutional Court ruled on July 1 to suspend the official release of the results.
