This was reported by the ESA observatory, Ukrinform reports.
This galaxy, about the size of our Milky Way galaxy, is located about 120 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Sails and is an “inhabitant” of the Hydra-Centauri supercluster.
NGC 3256 may look peaceful, but this image actually shows the aftermath of an ancient cosmic collision.
The warped galaxy is the debris of a head-on collision between two equally large spiral galaxies that astronomers estimate collided about 500 million years ago.
NGC 3256’s turbulent past is reflected in the long arms of shining dust and stars that extend outward from the galaxy’s main body.
Also, striking red and orange regions spread throughout the galaxy contain young stars formed as a result of collisions.
The person who discovered this object was German-born British astronomer John Herschel, who first observed it on March 15, 1836.
As reported by Ukrinform, the NASA/ESA Hubble space telescope photographed spiral galaxy UGC 11860 in the Pegasus constellation.
