Last Saturday, the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the Euclid Space Telescope. The launch took place from the Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral in the United States aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle. Euclid will observe the dark matter present in space and collect data on galaxies up to 10 billion light-years from Earth.
Now the observatory will make a space journey lasting about a month until it reaches the second Lagrange point (L2), located about 1.6 million kilometers from our planet. If all goes according to plan, the Euclid telescope, named after Euclid of Alexandria, the father of geometry, will begin collecting information about dark matter. Below you can follow how the telescope was launched.
The Euclid telescope explores space
ESA reportedly spent about $1.4 billion (approximately 6.6 billion reais) to develop the telescope. The European Agency was assisted by more than 3,500 people from 21 countries, about 300 institutions and 80 companies, including assistance from NASA. All of these investments are for let the telescope help humanity and unravel the mysteries of the cosmos.

The Euclid Space Telescope is equipped with a Visible Light Imaging Device (VIS) and a Near Infrared Spectrometer (NISP). With the help of the equipment, he will be able to create a three-dimensional map of distant objects in space. The researchers believe that the telescope will be able to pinpoint the location of such objects, which will help in the study of dark matter. “We will be mapping the Universe to try to understand where we fit into it and how we got here – how the entire Universe came into being from the moment of the Big Bang to the beautiful galaxies that we see around us, the solar system and life.“, – commented Isobel Hoek, an astronomer from Lancaster University, in an interview with the BBC. Now let’s hope that Euclid successfully gets to the second Lagrange point and begins his research.
