I almost choked on my breakfast today when I realized between the first and second cupcake that Google was about to shut down Google Drive. Imagine that I didn’t even open my eyes as a puppy and found out that probably the most widespread cloud storage service in the world and that it is also an important part of the ecosystems of Google in general and Gmail. especially would soon become a thing of the past.

And what could have caused such a decision? because we know it When it comes to putting products and services on the shelves, Google has no pulse if these do not respond to the company’s plans. We’ve talked about this on occasion before, and it’s also a debate where new opinions are always welcome, but the fact is that for one reason or another, the Google cemetery keeps adding new deceased… who , according to many headlines in the last few hours, should have been added Google Drive.

I spent a few seconds trying to figure out why such a successful service will be pulled, as the news talked about his farewell, the alternatives we can use when he is no longer available, etc., but nothing, nothing meaningful came to mind. Of course, it would be normal to read some of the news and find out the reasons. But again, it was between the first and second cake in the morning when I was still half asleep, which explains why I may not have been acting in the most logical way.

My fault I suppose because if I had acted like that I would have quickly remembered the importance of clickbait in this world of ours. And it’s like I said in the title of this post, Google is not going to shut down Google Drive. What it is going to do is drop support for the Google Drive desktop app for Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10 32-bit, and Windows Server 2012, which was also announced some time ago. Does this mean that users of these operating systems will lose access completely? Let’s see what Google has to say about it on the Google Drive for desktop release notes webpage:

«In August 2023, we will stop supporting Disk for desktops Windows 8/8.1, Windows Server 2012 and all 32-bit versions of Windows. To avoid service interruption, Windows users should upgrade to Windows 10 (64-bit) or later by August 2023. In other words, Google is going to pull support for the desktop app some operating systems whose life cycles have already ended some time ago. And affected users will be able to continue using the Google Drive web interface to use the service normally. Luckily, I did all that research before I ate my second cupcake, so the end of breakfast was calmer, if also a little sadder.
