The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted California-based startup Alef Aeronautics Inc. the permission to develop and test the first electric vehicle that can travel and fly.

This was reported by CNN, Ukrinform reports.

The regulatory agency said it granted Alef Aeronautics a certificate of airworthiness for limited missions such as research, development and exhibitions.

Alef Automotive said that Model A is the first flying vehicle that can drive on public roads and park like a normal car. It also has vertical take-off and landing capability.

It is assumed that the vehicle, which can take one or two passengers, will have a range of up to 320 kilometers on land and 180 kilometers in the air.

The company states that the flying car will be certified as a “low speed vehicle”, meaning it cannot travel faster than 40 km/h. “If the driver needs a higher speed, it is assumed he will resort to flying,” the press release states.

The FAA said many developers are currently working on vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles. However, Alef Aviation’s vehicle stands out from the others in that it can operate both on the road and in the air, looks like a normal car and can park in car parks.

However, the company needs permission from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to move the model on US roads.

The manufacturer plans to start selling the model by the end of 2025. The car will cost 300 thousand dollars.

Inspired by the movie Back to the Future, Alef Aeronautics was founded in 2015 in Palo Alto, California by Jim Duchovny, Konstantin Kysly, Pavel Markin and Oleg Petrov.

As reported, Suzuki Motor Corp. and Japanese startup SkyDrive Inc. It will begin joint flying car production in the spring of 2024.
