Last weekend, Google released an update to its privacy policy that now allows the use of public data to train artificial intelligence models. The change was submitted by the company on the company policy website.
Google’s policy has already allowed the collection of data from its users for “commercial purposes”, including “research and development”. It has been used for some time to improve and develop Google Translate. Now, with the latest update, Google has included its AI models in what it can use the data for.
The new policy also includes the use of data to train Bard and Cloud AI products. The updated policy text reads: “Google uses the information to improve our services and develop new products, features, and technologies that benefit our users and the community. For example, we use publicly available information to train Google AI models and build products and features. such as the capabilities of Google Translate, Bard and Cloud AI.”
Google’s updated policy clarifies that the company may use publicly available information to train these models. For example, if company information appears on a website, Google may index and display that information on its services. However, this does not mean that Google plans to use the personal data associated with your account for training, but only publicly available information.
The update to Google’s privacy policy comes at a time when the use of public data to train AI models has come under fire. Recently, a class-action lawsuit was filed against OpenAI accusing it of extracting “large amounts of personal data from the Internet”, including “stolen personal information”, to train its GPT models without prior consent.
This move by Google makes it clear that anything users post online can be used to train Bard, future versions of it, and any other generative AI product that Google develops. With the evolution of AI on the rise, we are likely to see many similar processes in the future as more companies develop their own generative AI products.
