Google has released the July 2023 Android security update, currently rolling out to Google Pixel phones and the recently released Pixel tablet. While this update mainly focuses on bug fixes and security improvements, users shouldn’t expect any major new features until Android 14 is released this year.
What’s new in the July Android security update for Google Pixel devices
The update includes two Pixel tablet-specific fixes that address battery and charging performance issues, as well as intermittent lock screen notification issues. The purpose of these enhancements is to improve the overall Pixel tablet experience.
On the security front, Google has released the Android Security Bulletin for July, which consists of two patch levels: July 1 and July 5. The July 1 patches address Android, system, and Wi-Fi vulnerabilities, including those marked critical. The July 5 patches contain vendor-specific fixes and address a total of 20 vulnerabilities, and one critical vulnerability has been identified (CVE-2023-21629).
The July 13 Android security patch is now rolling out to various Pixel devices, including Pixel 4a, 4a 5G, 5, 5a, 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a and tablet. Specifically, the size of the update varies, with the Pixel tablet getting 23.27 MB of updates and the Pixel 7 getting 21.67 MB of updates.
This update is also the first regular security update for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, announced at Google I/O in May and rolled out in June. While the update is rolling out to Google Pixel devices now, some Samsung phones have already received it. Users can easily check for updates on their Pixel devices by going to Settings > System > System Update.
